New Reel Gearing Ratio Question

Featured Replies

Hi guys, im new here and looking for a new baitcaster i was looking at the quantum smoke sl150 and am not sure if i want the 6.6.1 or the 7.3.1. Ive heard that the 6.6.1 is most versitile but i will mostly be fishing with senkos and jigs so will the 7 be best i will also be mostly fishing probably 60% smallmouth 40% largemouth if that means anything. Most people say it comes down to personel preference but i am new to baitcasters so i wouldnt know.

:hi:     Welcome to the forum.  :teeth3:

RM should know.  : :teeth:

:welcome:    I like 5.4:1 rears for hard pulling cranks and dragin big fish out of heavy salad, and 7.1:1 when I want fast retrieves for lighter pulling lures or when fishing long lines in open water with finesse baits to pickup line quickly, and When I want a reel for anything goes,,,,,,6.4:1,, this is the most versatile general purpose do everything gear ratio,,,,,,,,,,as .RM. said, it's your choice it is all personal preference!!!!!  :ok-wink:

RM is right...

It's just what you feel comfortable useing..Nothing is the BEST.

You can make anything work for anything, what is ideal is another subject.

I use a 7:1 for jigs and top water only. and a 6 something for everything else.

You don't say if this is your first BC, if it is I'd get a "6".

If you have one already a "7" would be a good compliment.

Hope this helps, and Welcome!
