Rudder For 8' Pelican

Featured Replies

Well I took my new to me, 8' out a couple days ago. If I had a hand gernade on me, I wouldn't be making this thread. I have to get a rudder for the rear. I had no control over the boat and the slightest breeze just sent me on a never ending tail spin.

Does anyone sell one completed or have the plans to build one?

i used an old minkota trolling motor the kind with the composite shaft and a 6x9 piece of plate steel the motor was shot so i cut the top and bottom heads off cut about a 4" groove in the shaft and bolted the plate steel in the groove works like a dream

I found a minn kota mounting bracket on E-bay - just do a search for it - then I had a buddy cut me a piece of a road sign he had - I then screwed it to a steel pipe - a old trolling motor pipe would probably be lighter - i do think I have to cut it down in size somewhat - but it works great so I'm just leaving it alone for now.

I did a similar thing as these guys and used a trolling motor bracket and a piece of 3/4 conduit and a chunk of 1/4 Plexiglas.I drilled some holes in the Plexiglas and used some 3/4 conduit hangers to attach the Plexiglas to the piece of conduit.A rudder makes a huge difference.
