Any one fish with the "top prop"? Do you get a lot of misse's too?

Featured Replies

Doe's anyone have any "trick's" that help with getting more hook up's than misse's? I have one and the bass seem to hit and miss quite a bit, Thank's for any help ;) Junebugman

I have used them for pike. They are typically a low hookup percentage bait. They work best when fished slow on super long casts. A lot of times fish actually leap over them.

A lot of time the fish(bass, pike, musky) are not actually missing the lure. They come up and purposely whack the lure, with no intention of "eating" it. There are a lot of theories why they do this. A friend of mine told me this, who is a fisheries biologist for the DNR. Musky are notorious for doing this, fishing surface baits after dark.

It doesn't matter what I fish on top, I get ALOT of misses.

If the fish are blowing up on your top water - have a backup set and ready to throw (a Senko or T-rig) - if you are not in a tournament, just leave your top water out there while you throw back - this can some times get the fish to re-strike.

From what I have seen, the second a fish breaks the surface most people yank the crap out of their pole before the fish even had a chance to get the bait in it's mouth... a lil patience goes a long way in getting a better hookup ratio.

try adding a sureset hook on the back end of the bait. I have noticed an increase in hookups by doing this. And they usually get hooked on the sureset part of the hook. I only use these hooks on topwaters as regular crankbaits sure seem to set on rocks, wood, and anything else  ;D
