Casting Or Spinning For Drop Shot Rod

Featured Replies

I'm going to put a dedicated drop shot rod together, and I was wondering what your using and why. I'd much rather fish with a baitcaster, but will it be a pain in the a** because of the light weight. I'm currently using a Daiwa Procaster spinning combo that I got from BPS for my drop shot rod, its a med action 7' rod. I would like something a little more sensitive though, I'm looking at the Avid 6'8" ML/XF casting rod

Unless you wanna drop some bread into a casting reel, or plan on throwing at the bear minimum 1/4 oz. weights - You will want a spinning set up. Light to ultra light casting rod (well good ones) ain't to cheap either.

i really dislike spinning so when i first got into dropshot fishing, i bought a dedicated casting setup for it: a shimano crucial CRC-D66M http://tackletour.com/reviewshimanocrucial.html and a daiwa sol. the rod is really nice and buttery smooth but the problem was not having freespool fast enough as the dropshot rig is falling toward the bottom. plus, when working the lure (whether jiggling or dragging the rig back), it felt like i was always fighting the weight of the reel on top of the rod wanting to torque itself down with gravity. when i finally tried dropshotting with a spinning rod/reel, it was like heaven. flip/pitch/cast your rig out and it falls straight to the bottom quickly. then, the reel hangs down below the reel and the balance is natural. i have not used that casting dropshot rod now in years.

I keep both spinning & bait casting rigs set up for drop shot fishing in my boat all the time  Open water - sparse cover, I'll go with the spinning gear.  As the cover/brush gets more gnarly, I will be more likely to grab the "Bubba" drop shot gear.  I feel pretty confident using either rig.

Overall, I tend to use the bait casting gear more often, because it is better suited to the lakes that I more commonly fish.  My bait cast drop shot gear consists of a 7'5" Kistler  heavy action flipping/pitching rod and a Shimano Curado 50E spooled with 20 lb Abrazx fluorocarbon.

The E50 Curado is what I use too..

I say both but if your budget is for one only use spinning and braid with a leader of floro after your swivel.

with casting its just as easy even to drop. I just free spool until I reach the bottom, of course a little thumb helps.

worth repeating...

Definitely spinning, tried it on bc gear and it wasnt my cup of tea...

I've done it on both before. As long as the gear is appropriate I don't think it matters that much. Go with what you're comfortable with.
