Good Line For My First Baitcaster

Featured Replies

I just posted the other day that I got my first baitcaster at BPS (Carbonlite rod 6'6" mf with the PQ reel in a 6.4:1 gear ratio).  I had them put on the free bulk line since I wanted to practice and I didn't want to have to cut out any expensive line if I got a bad birds nest.  I have been fishing a few times and practicing a bunch and want to put better line on it.  I use braided line on my spinning combos with a flouro leader but I was unsure if that would be a good choice for my baitcaster or if I should go with flouro.  My local DSG is having buy one get one on line and I think I am going to pick some up to put on the new setup.  Thanks in advance for the help and input.

You may want 40-50lb braid(power pro/suffix) I prefer 50 --can use leaders if needed (mono/ fluoro/co poly)--

You can put tape on the spool after a cast to prevent bad backlashes while learning. Prevents the backlash from going too far

12 lb yo-zuri hybrid  10 bucks for 600 yards on ebay ---good all purpose line, breaks around 19lbs

10-14lb mono  if you like mono--suffix elite/siege --- trilene xl/xt

Fluoro sinks so if you plan to fish top water it may give trouble, but I use it on a dedicated rod and as leader for my braid rod

Silver Thread I still love this line !

Braid hands down. It casts great, had no memory, is easy to get backlashes out, and will last forever. Stay clear of flouro while you are learning. Mono can be ok bc it is cheap but still not better than braid imo. Go for something in the 40-50 lb range.
