How To Fish Muddy/stained Water?

Featured Replies

I read some fishing reports on my local lake and they all say that the water is muddy and looks like "chocolate milk". Also, that it has a bunch of debris such as trees and logs floating around. They say the south end is more clear and the north is more muddy. It is part of the Catawba river system so its not too uncommon for there to be debris, but I have never heard of it being this bad!

How does this effect the fish? A local pro said this causes fish to feed. Does that mean they will be more shallow?

How would you go at fishing in this situation?

...Sounds like I would be fishing more in the shallow or (lower ) waters and something with a lot of shine and sound ! Or maybe live bait like frog ... hope this helps out since I don't promote a brand name you can check out a lot of the videos and reading material that BR sites have to offer :)...and good luck !!

Dark colors like blacks, purples, blues, bright colors like chartreuse, chrome, pink, red. Noisy baits. Spinnerbaits with colorado or indiana blades. Fish the floating debris sometimes fish will lay under it and ambush pray from their mobile cover.

I'm also interested to hear what others say about this kind of condition. When chocolate milk happens in my local lakes, it is usually winter or early spring times here. And fishing becomes very very bad and I had no luck in this kind of conditions, even with something noisy, shinny, bright/dark colors.

the lower end of one of the lakes i fish is always muddy, where the backwaters are. When the water gets up a little they will bite like u wouldn't believe but they will stay shallow in the muddy water, at least in this lake and i use a black/blue jig with rattles or a rage craw by itself

I read the report wrong lol.. I meant the south end is more muddy and the north is more clear..

I am thinking that I should use a chatterbait/chatterswim and maybe a crank if theyre that shallow.
