Through some experimentation, I've discovered a cool technique for protecting your dropshot weight as well as adding a little more "weedlessness" to the rig. 

I add a plastic bead and a pegged bullet weight on top my dropshot weight to protect the line where it goes through the metal catch of the dropshot weight.

The bead slips down over the metal point and the bullet weight allows the whole thing to slip through the "gunch" a little easier.

so, from bottom to top its: dropshot sinker, bead, pegged bullet sinker.   

I've always put a bullet weight above my drop shot weights. It helps it to wiggle loose from anything that it might snag on. No need for the bead though, imo.  I don't peg the bullet weight either.  Seems to work better if its free.

I ran out of drop shot weights earlier this season so I just put a bullet sinker on top of a split shot weight. I haven't bought any drop shot weights since and I drop shot a lot.

I tie on a good snap swivel, and then clip on one of these. I like them for their snagless properties, as I often drift for smallmouth with a dropshot.

I do something very similar and I don't think I've bought a drop shot specific weight in quite a while. I used pencil lead commonly used by river anglers that has the same shape as these. I use a special pliers that flatten one end of a piece I can cut to any length I wish. These pliers can also "punch" and hole through the flattened section I just made to which I can add the snap swivel.

Sometimes I forego the swivel snap when I get impatient. ;D

Scrutch that is a good idea. If I ever use a drop shot weight again, I just might do that. Incidentally, I tried putting a rattle around the weight for drop shotting is less clear water. It worked pretty well.

yes, it is what you want to happen, but I must have squeezed the split shot too hard and broke it off. I then went back to the dropshot sinker.

If that's what works for you, great.  It's probably cheaper than what I do anyway.
