Ya know Deep Cranking isnt THAT difficult afterall

Featured Replies

Explored the Deep Cranking realm a little more yesterday.

Put a Marker Buoy on the end of a point and cast towards the marker. Was throwing a series 4 SK crank in Tennessee Shad and on only the 2nd cast I hooked up with a fish. No size at all to it but it got me pumped.

I know a series 4 isnt considered deep,so I decided to throw my Fat Free Shad. Wouldnt ya know it,on the retrieve I hooked into my buoy line so I figured I just screwed my spot up,went else where so I could let that area cool off in case I spooked the fish.

I threw a series 6 SK crank a little yesterday too. It had a little more resistance than the series 4 but was bearable. The Fat Free Shad was bearable too.

What I got all confused about was my Luhr Jensen Deep Secret. Its a 1/4 oz bait and is supposed to be easy on cranking because of its size, will dive to 15 ft + and that little bait will just wear you out compared to the larger ones.

Everything's easier with the correct equipment.

Airboure Angler what kind of rod/reel combo are you using? I throw my deep cranks on a 7'6"  BPS MH Crankin' Stick with a 5:1 Shimano Curado and this combo does a great job of winding in these cranks and hauling in the fish. If your not using equipment made for this type of fishing it will be a chore to fish these type of baits.

Im using a 7' MH Berkley Lightning Rod with a BPS XPS  Pro Qualifier 5:1 ratio reel. Im throwing the baits on 10# Mono. Could be that im sitting down when im fishing why I might feel its a bit of a chore when cranking?

Why should it ? I feel no difference in fishing standing up or sitting down when I 'm fishing from my tub, actually I do most of my fishing from the seat, my compadre still hasn 't learned to not move suddenly in the tub.

What is the action on the rod?  Is it more moderate?  I find that moderate action rods cushion the vibrations a little bit more.  It could be the vibrations in your rod arm wearing you out.

Not sure the tip action. I do know that when I cast the tip wiggles as the line goes out.

Would that be considered a fast action tip?

Try the BPS rod (it's sometimes on sale for $ 50), it's rated for baits up to 1-1/2 oz. Also, get a 7'6" rod it will probably add 10-15 yds to your cast which is critical for these types of baits in most situations and this rod will be more moderate than the lightening rod but it's not a noodle stick either so you can rip the bait off the weeds which will often trigger a strike. There are also  cranking rods from other manufacturers that will do a great job but I like the BPS which also comes in a telescopic version for easy storage in your rod locker. Good luck and while your at it pick up a few of the Strike King Series 6XD I've been doing very well with it this season.
