Shallow crankbaits - How deep is "shallow"?

Featured Replies

What is the general concensus on shallow cranks?  Is shallow considered 0-3 ft?  0-4ft?  0-6ft?  or does it depend on relative water depth.  Like, if the water is 40ft deep, does 10ft count as shallow?

Thanks,

Dave

surface to 5ft =shallow

5 to 10 = medium

10+ = deep

I'll go with the flow here on depth.

Thanks for the info, all!  Guess i need to try more than just baby -1's then, since i haven't had much luck  with them.

Try some that run in the 3-5' range.  Bomber's Square A is a dandy in that respect as are the smaller Bandits.

Shallow to me is 0' to 1'. When most of my shore spots are 0 to 10' the 0 to 1' is shallow.

I can work any floating crankbait slowly to work in the shallows when there any deeper depth bait. A floating bomber that goes to 13' can be used slowly so it stays higher. But remember the bass strike upwards and we can work any floating crank topwater tooin the shallows and over submereged weeds. They love the bomber FAT A 05 in redapplecraw over the weeds. You can also speed it up to make it dive into the open weed pockets too then let it pop up and go back to a topwater bait.

I think you'll find "medium" divers are the most used by most "crankers" - those lures that run say 4- to 8-feet deep. In my deep clear lakes (Table Rock, Beaver Lake) that is a shallow crank.

I still use things like a DT4 on those lakes though, especially in Spring.
