When fishing a shakey head do you fish light with a spinning rod, heavy with a casting setup, or some combination of both?

Shaky heads work great on a spinning rod with light line because of the fine wire hooks, you don't need the power to set the hook. Shaky heads are also a great presentation for when the fishing is tough. You will catch fish if you work it slow and stopping to shake the worm lightly when you reach some sort of structure, whether its a rock, stump, log, etc. Don't over work the worm, keep it simple and the bass will tell you what they want.

I dont think it really matters if its on a spinning or casting setup. As for personal preference most people use a spinning rod because most spinning rods are lighter and also have lighter line which you preferably would want because it gives the small bait more action than heavier line would.

 

However I have a baitcasting outfit with 10lb test that i would feel completely comfortable throwing a shakey head on. But I think it'd be more wise to use spinning tackle to drop the worm faster so you dont have to pull line out to get a vertical fall, in fact im pretty sure thats the #1 reason people use a spinning rod outfit for it.

 

 

 

Also why are you shakey head fishing? Throw on a Rage tail shad or a spinnerbait and go burn some flats man! Go for the big girls not the 12 inchers. This is fall.

I do the same.

Like nearly all terminology in bass fishing presentation techniques have different definition regionally.

Flipping is different from pitching, both are power presentations. Finesse is a light tackle presentation and both spinning and baitcasting outfits are used to precisely present smaller lures on line less than 10 lb test.

Shaky head jigs are designed to attach a soft plastic worm or smaller creature, the weights are 3/8 oz or less, heavier you are getting into power jig fishing with standard bass tackle IMO.

I fish shaky and dart heads with spinning tackle, 6 to 8 lb FC, jigs between 1/8 to 1-4 oz with 5" to 6" worms.

Any jig 3/8 and up I use my standard jig rod with 10 to 14 lb FC and consider this power fishing.

I shake at some point all soft plactics regardless of what rod I'm useing.

In more open water areas I'll use a spinning rod with 20# braid and floro leader, and mostly rig a soft jerk bait wacky STYLE.

 

But I'm shaking all bottom contact plastics and jig's with a med to heavy casting outfit regarless.

yea who ever said flippin n pitch is only for baitcaster is 100% incorrect, anything you can do on a baitcaster, you can do on spinning gear and more

I flip and pitch Senkos and other plastics on spinning gear all the time!

Shaky head, drop shot, or wacky worm always on spinning gear. Everything else, casting.

I use both spinning and casting. My main shakey head set up used to be a casting rig.
