  I know that PVC trees hold crappie I was wondering if they would hold Largemouth as well I was thinking of even making one out of 4" piece to make the structure larger any help would be appreciated

pvc trees hold bait fish.  If they are properly located then bass will be there also.

would making them out of larger pipe make a difference ?

I think smaller diameter but more branches would be better.

The best way for your attractors to get fish faster is to sandpaper all of the PVC to make it rough and attract algae.  Then comes the bait fish, and then the larger fish will come to eat the bait fish.

While we are on the subject,Is it legal to do this in any public water? Did you buy the material or is there somewhere you can focus nd PVC pipe in the trash?

Very NOT legal to put in public water. It is considered trash.

 

We put some in a private pond by an extended floating fishing pier we built last year. Not really seen any results yet.

I have access to a pond I enjoy fishing. I could do it there I suppose. And the guy who owns it is a plumber/electrician, I bet he has some scrap material I could use. I haven't found any cover in it yet. Sounds like a new project!

We've caught some big bass out of stakebeds before. If it attracts fish it will attract all types of fish.  

one thing I've wondered is how much of a difference spacing makes. We're all well acquainted with how "something different" attracts bass (e.g. a hole in lilypads, a boulder in a gravel area, etc.) So, I ponder whether putting too many, too close together might be more of a problem (for pinpointing fish) that just one "here and there"

Remember you are not attracting bass, you are attracting bait fish.  I think 3-4 clumped in an area of  20' x 20' is the most productive.  Teneroc FMA has a lot of these and that seems to be the most productive arrangement.

Wonder if there's a pollution aspect (as in "off-gassing")? Couldn't affect bait fish in the short term much I guess, but wonder what the fishery-bio guys on here think?

Well I would think that depends on the properties of the material used, I would think that most commonly used materials degrade too slowly, and the amounts in which they are found too few, to cause much of a problem

I have seen pvc that holds small fish  and the larger fish are always in eye shot of them.

Smith Mountain Lake is owned by the electric company and a public lake. The Dept of game and fisheries has done test studies with these idea's on the lake and have that they have been productive so they have started a permit program where shorline landowners can apply for a permit to set them out right off their own shorline/dock. but without the permit its illeagle.  

As for the legality of it, you should check with your state Wildlife Management agent. Not all states are the same...... I like using PVC but to be honest with you I've found that full length bamboo tied to concrete blocks works great. They float up, they take years to decay and they are great attractors when placed on the right structure. I put 5 to a bundle and sink them with one block. I place 5 to 10 bundles in the same area and years later I'm still catching fish off of them.
