Assistance With Abu Garcia 5000Al

Featured Replies

Just picked this up.Seller says its "good to go." I took it apart and noticed the brake blocks on the spool are missing. What's a good part number for these brake blocks?

What vintage might this be? Number on the bottom of the foot reads 84-1

If it uses 2 brake blocks on the handle side of the spool, it's probably ABU part # 20211. I believe these were made in the early to mid '80s and were regular 5000 type reels with an aluminum spool.

Edit - if it has the 6-pin brake system, the part # is 975043.

Its the 2 pin system that goes on the handle side...thanks for the assistance

If you want to go with lighter brake blocks, you can use part# 20209 (blue). I've swapped these on a couple of my ABU reels and it makes casting lighter baits a little easier.

Scapping those brake blocks is a common practice. In a reel with a non-disengaging level wind the brakes aren't really needed in most cases.
