I'd like to build a 12 to 14' open row boat first, wood or fiberglass to keep the noise down???

Why build, there's plenty of platforms readily available

Wood is not as noisy as fiberglass.

If you are stuck for some winter project, go ahead and build it.  I think you'd save a little money by getting some used boat.  Once you get it done, a wood boat is going to be pretty heavy.   Heavy to life and heavy to row.  If you are looking to buy a rowboat, new or used - the best row boat I've ever been in was a Hayward row-troller.  Mid 80's - living in central Missouri, I had a professor pal from Minnesota who had one.   It was a 15' long semi-V fiberglass boat that easily fished 2 guys.  It was the easiest, straightest rowing boat I've ever been in, and the only one I've ever seen in Missouri.   At the time, he told me that they were pretty popular in Wisconsin and Minnesota, where he went to school as an undergrad.

In addition, a medium sized 12 volt electric trolling motor moved this boat around great.  If you are going to build, look into that design.

I remember someone giving my grandfather an old plywood boat one time. Every time I here that country song about an old plywood boat. I think about that old sucker. We never used it as he had a nice aluminum boat or two usually. But I remember moving it many times to cut weeds around the shop. Looked pretty cool but was a little heavy.

If I had the skills, tools and time. I'd like to build a wood canoe. Man them things are pretty.

I've toyed with the idea of putting oar locks on my canoe. As the sucker doesn't paddle very well. But it's getting a trolling motor eventually.
