Lake Balance

Featured Replies

Hello all, I have a lake approx. 12 acres, shallow flats, lots of deep water,28' in areas. While I have had success with larger fish (pb--7-8 ), I do catch an abundance of small bass, Question is , should I remove a percentage of these "dinks",and in turn have a bluegill fry every so often to balance my little piece of heaven. By the way, I did catch 50 gills through the ice here in Indiana last Saturday. Bent poles to all.

Welcome to BR

If your the owner then by all means start taking out the smaller bass.. If you got a decent amount of 4-5lb+ bass then your fishery must be doing pretty good. Just do some research on the amount to take out per acre etc. As for sunnies im not sure the whole deal with them... Someone with better knowledge can help you out

Yes you should harvest some bass. The bluegills are the primary food source for bass in most areas of the country but they reproduce so fast you can have a "Bluegill fry occasionally too. Provide enough food for the food source and the bass will grow.
