Sylvan Lake, Mn

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Has anyone fished Sylvan Lake in MN near Brainerd? Ive only been able to target pads, points and some breaks because I've never had a boat with electronics to fish there. The water is SOO clear there. I am convinced that there has to be some decent fish there, but I've maybe only brought in 1 bass over 4lbs since fishing there once a year for many years. What are your thoughts on the lake? I should be getting a new boat this spring. Should I take the time to search around and find some good structure? Thanks.

Thanks. I figured there was a small chance but it won't hurt to try!

I have never fished that lake personally, but I've fished a number of lakes around there and I seem to always do well with throwing a Keitech Swing Impact FAT 4.8" bluegill flash on an Eagle Claw weighted swimbait hook. Normally it works well around points and especially with the clear water the action of the Keitech's tail is incredible and drives the fish crazy. Best of luck to you

I have not fished that lake either but I have fished the Brainerd lakes area quite a bit. In my opinion the best way to catch big bass in clean natural lakes is on the outside weed edge. I like dropshots, jigs and texas rigs, in clear water go more natural colors like green pumpkin or watermelon red. for moving baits I would go with a heavy spinnerbait like the SK Bottomdweller and run it along the deep weeds. If you just want to catch a lot of fish get some chart/white spinners and cast the drop edges and the flats. focus on points and steep breaks with lots of grass near by. hope this helps some.

I fished Bad Medicine up north of Park Rapids once last year and it was very clear as well. I had luck with top waters in the middle of the summer focusing on shallow rocks.  it was the middle of the day too! Not sure if this helps. Welcome to the forum. Great to see more MN guys on here!
