Fireline And Topwater

Featured Replies

I have never used braided/fused line before, always fluorocarbon or monofilament. But I decided to put 10 lb Fireline on one of my reels. Now I'm wondering, when I fish topwater like poppers and jitterbugs can I tie the Fireline directly to the lure, or should I use a monofilament leader? I'm new to braided line so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

The only reason I would tie a leader is because sometimes braid will foul up the hooks on the cast, but even then I almost never tie a leader.

So how often do the hooks get caught on the line, enough to cause a problem or just occasionally?

Thanks

There are a LOT of threads here debating leader or no leader with braid. They are not required. If YOU think it helps, use one. I see no reason to use one for MY fishing so I don't. Since you haven't fished braid before, try it both ways and see what you prefer.

Not enough to bother me but it happens every now and then. More often with super spooks than anything else

It might be more difficult with "walking the dog" techniques with braid if youre not used to it since the braid can bunch up/wrap around the hooks, but that can be countered with the practice. I dont think a leader is necessary. Having the right rod for topwater will help as well.

Looks like I'm giving no leader a shot first then. Thanks for the info.
