Returned a rod and reel that I wasn't thrilled with. Now what the heck do I want to buy!?

Gloom or Doybn if you want a good rod, and wait until shimano release its new Curado then older model should be on sale.

Dobyns champion with a lews or a shimano

Definitely leaning towards a 685CB, 705CB, or 705CB glass to pair with my ci4+. Going to be for squarebills and maybe lipless. Only reason I'm thinking 685CB is to make easier and accurate casts to all the laydowns at my cottage lake, but not sure that will give me the most versatility of the 3 rods.

Can't go wrong with anyone of them!

Can you throw lipless crankbaits on the 705CB glass rod?

It's perfect for lip less

Okay then. I guess that helps my decision. Might shell out the extra cash and pick up a 684CB for topwater/jerkbaits also

I LOVE spending someone else's money!  :teeth:

Aetos 7' MH MF for squarebills and lipless cranks

Zilion.  Been seeing used ones going for $175, but not everyone has the strength to use the heavyweight Zillion all day  :teeth3:

so look for a used Alphas or Fuego although I suppose if you simply must have a Shimano go with a 50 size model.

684cb is a great topwater/jerkabait stick, i would also look into the 704cb if you dont mind the extra length. In terms of lipless cranks the 764RM is a favorite, squarebills cant go wrong with the 705cb glass!

I was looking at the 704cb but I am not super tall plus I prefer shorter topwater/jerkbait rods so I dont hit the water with the rod. I ended up getting both the 705CBglass and 684CB from Ron at Valley Sports.

Not as familiar with Dobyns crankin rods, but 5 power is what I would want. A 6'8 rod should be a good all round rod for jerks, topwaters, ans cranks.

A 6:1 reel would give a good deal of versatility for picking up slack on tops, jerks, lipless, and still is a fairly fast reel which is what I like in a squarebill set up.

I'm not as concerned with sensitivity in those rods. I like a graphite rod with a good tip section and mod fast action. It helps with rippin cranks and lipless cranks as well as working jerks and topwaters.

I hear ya about the 5 power. I think I saw someone say in another thread that the 704cb is "THE" jerkbait rod according to Gary.  So i figured Id stay in the 4 power but in the 6'8 since I like shorter rods for the those applications.

I already have a 6.2:1 Ci4+ to go with my squarebill rod and will probably get another for the topwater/jerkbait rod.

I use a Powell Endurance 695, and I like backbone it has. I like throwing squarebills around a lot of cover, and I like the extra power to keep they from wrapping me around dock poles, trees, brush, ext... But the 684 should be a great rod for this too.

That's a good reel! Should make a good combo.

I'm looking to upgrade topwater and jerbait rods, I've been think of getting 2 Dobyns. Was looking at getting one of each the 684 and 685. But the sale is gone now so ill either wait or look another direction.
