Bps Pq. ???'s

Featured Replies

Cashed in Christmas gift cards and picked up 4 of them. Never have used them but based on reviews and $64 per I figured why not. Before I take them out.

1. How many magnet pins out? They have 4 out.

2. I use mp7 pro oil on reels. Is there a specific oil they like?

3. Are they ready to go out of box or strip re-oil?

4. How are they for salt water?

Thanks

I can't remember which way the brakes engage without looking.  When I first started using them, I turned 2 brakes on and set the mag brake to 2 or 3.

That oil should be fine.

I used mine directly out of the box.  Some guys wouldn't.  They'd flush and clean before use.  I just do it once a year.

I would only use them in freshwater only.  JMO

They are great reels.  I am currently fixing to upgrade mine to Shimano's over the course of a couple years.

Here is a good read.  http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/126636-bps-pro-qualifier-bc-reel-–-5-year-challenge-–-4-years-down-1-to-go/?hl=%2Bpq+%2Byear

I am a big fan of the PQ's as well.  I have a 5.3 to 1 and a 6.4 to 1, both have set the centrifical brakes to 2, magenetic to 1 or 0.  I just use the abu garcia reel oil and some ptfe hobby grease.  I'd just go fishing with them and clean them if needed.

Id leave 2, maybe 3 pins out  if you know how to cast. Salt water, not made for it long term...I used mine out of the box, but cleaning and re-oiling made a difference.

The guys at the bass pro around here tell me they use their pro qualifiers for inshore fishing exclusively down here in south Louisiana. They said they just wash them out with water after the trips and they keep working. I have 2 of them, but have only ever used them for fresh water purposes. Great reels at the $80-100 range. Even better for $64. I used mine straight out of the box with 2 brakes on and the dial around 4.

I would flush and re-oil. Mine was packed and it made a huge difference.

Flushing and re-oiling is a good cast effective way to maximize performance but I recommend fishing a new reel hard right out of the box to eliminate the possibility of any warrantee issues. After the first season have it deep cleaned and then keep the bearings lightly oiled and have it serviced as needed.

1. The pins on the side of the spool are the centrifugal brakes.  I like 2 turned on paired with a light spool tension.

2. I use Quantum hot sauce just because I have it laying around.  I use silicone based grease to lubricate the gears.

3. There's 2 schools of thought on that one.  I say fish it out of the box and go from there.

4.  I'd say no.  Most anything can be used in that environment with constant cleaning and lubrication.  I don't think the drag on the reel is able to deal with some of the fish found in saltwater environments.  A Shimano would be a better reel for that environment.
