Interesting Day Frogging...

Featured Replies

Yesterday I was fishing one of my favorite ponds. I started out just practicing a few ideas. I was throwing a Stanley Frog up on the shore and dragging into the water and back. I was also using Yo-Zuri 15# as I didn't think of catching any fish.

The area was pretty heavy with lily pads. To my surprise I had a 2lber hit and I landed it. about 10 more casts and another a little smaller. Then a 3rd 2+ lbs.

My point is I was fishing somewhat heavy pads and didn't have any problems with break offs using copoly.

So my question is ... How many of you don't use braid for frogging? And why?

I use 20# flouro in the pads...just because lol

Ive never had an issue...not yet anyhow lol

That's interesting. I have always used braid but really found no difference or problems without using it.

Thanks for your input.

Heavy vegetation is probably not equal across the US. I always use braid because copoly/fluoro/mono will never cut through lily pad stalks or other dense weeds the way braid does.  I don't like any stretch in frog fishing so that would rule out the rest as well.  Whatever works for you is what matters.

For frogging I use strictly braid. Anything else I have found has way too much stretch to it. For example, using the cover you were fishing in, if 5+ lb bass would have inhaled your frog, when you stick em with braid you feel the thud of the hook driving home. My experience with anything else, when you set the hook, you feel the stretch of the line. It doesn't mean you can't still land a fish without using braid, but I don't take chances like that when a pig is on the line, with a frog. Frog fishing with a leader... me personally, I would not do. The hooksets on frog is pretty violent, and the chance of that leader snapping on one of those strong hooksets is highly probable. These are just my thoughts on personal experience.

was this a ribbit? I think of horny toads, ribbits and that ilk as "toads" that are fished on a more steady retrieve and I guess you could get away with mono easier - but with either frogs or toads you won't get the hooksets you can with braid and if you're in tough veggies braid will cut its way out. But fish what  you will - just never stop frog fishing.

It was a Ribbit.

Don't get me wrong. I also frog with braid. I am just passing on what happened.

goes to show - the only hard and fast rule to bass fishing is you must go bass fishing

Every now and then I use mono like 20 lb xt if I am fishing around wood, or in a sparse vegetation Clearwater lake... usually it is 50-65lb braid...
