Nc Spawn Issues :-/

Featured Replies

Last week in NC water temps were in the 50-51 degree range due to 50-55 degree air temps. This week the air temps shot to spring at 79-85 degrees. Water temps the last 4 days have been 60-63 at all the ponds and lakes. On the electronics the deep water shows pretty much nada. Shallow bass have hit my minnow swim bait about 2-3 feet. Pretty much depths between 2 feet and deep open water I'm skunked. What are the patterns usually? Are they getting to shallow to feed or to spawn? What should I throw and where? Is this still pre spawn? Or have they spawned already? I heard water temps need to be in the 70's.

Water temps certainly don't need to be In the 70s to catch a good bag that's post spawn pretty much. I would burn crankbaits shallow craw patterns, small swimbaits, swim jig also what kind of vegetation do you have?

Just because it's the spawn doesn't mean they are shallow everywhere. Protected areas, near deeper water with harder bottom and decent cover will hold more fish than areas without those ingredients.

The electronics shows me the hard and soft bottoms and I can easily find those kinds there also.  I was thinking maybe throw a 3-5 foot square bill at the bank and bring it in towards the deep water.  Or am I better off throwing to the center and bringing back towards the bank?

I doubt they've spawned yet, seeing as the water level was cold until recently. I'd focus on anything that could be considered cover or an ambush point. Whether that's a wind-protected cove, a downed tree, an area in the shadows, etc.
