Count Down

Featured Replies

I hear Bill Dance talk about counting down for suspended fish. What exactly does he mean. He was using a Booyah. Rig. I have also heard this on crankbaits.

Hello and Welcome to BR ~

Counting Down is a technique where when using a bait the sinks at rest, an angler will count the seconds as the bait descends.  Once it reaches a desired depth, the angler retrieves the bait hoping to illicit a strike.

The use of a fish fisher is obviously helpful here and knowing the fall or sink rate of your bait is important too.  Suspended bass are often fairly hard to catch but in some circumstances this technique is very effective.

Good Luck

The countdown is an average one second rate of fall per 12".

Certain lures may vary.

Rapala has a series of it's original minnow plug, called the "Count Down" minnow. It sinks at about a foot per second. This is an extremely productive lure; especially early, or late, in the season and/or if the fish are suspended. What you are trying to do here is to get your bait moving horizontally at the level the fish are suspended in. This keeps your lure in the fish zone longer.
