I will be rigging devil spears 4 inch and pit boss for flippin this year and want to use the vmc hooks but not quite sure which size would be versatile? I was think 4? What do you guys think, i have heard vmc run a size small than normal?

I haven't used either, but I decide on a hooks size by making sure there is about the same space between the hook and bottom of the hooked plastic, as the thickness of the plastic itself.

that's what I was thinking, 

the sizes are definitely goofy. I would check them out in store before purchasing them if possible. 

For 4" Pit boss's and 4" Devil Spears I use the following hooks: 5/0 VMC straight shank "Ike approved"  heavy duty flipping hook for punching, 4/0 heavy duty VMC "Ike approved" EWG hook for everything but punching.

What ww2farmer said ...The VMC Flipp'n Hooks come in standard (they run at least one size smaller) and the Heavy Duty (which run true to size) .

4/0 or 5/0. I dont personally like the VMC Flippin' hooks(i like all their other hooks though). The bait keeper breaks pretty easily. I do agree that the sizes are wacky, but 4/0 or 5/0 should do you good.

The Devil Spear is a Thick bait, and I flip it, Swim it, and use it as a jig trailer, spinnerbait, chatterbait trailer as it is extremely versatile and is one of my favorite Havoc baits. I always use at least a 4/0 or 5/0 EWG thick hook regardless of brand. If you rig it and pierce the bait with the hook, you want to make sure the point as plenty of space to penetrate for a good hookset.....I always try to use the smallest hook possible for best presentation, but if flipping, I simply want Reliablity and a hook that is not going to bend...I have been happy with the VMC hooks and I love the smaller sizes for smaller baits for pressured lakes.....and smaller baits...Crawbugs, BB Crickett, rocket craw which is thinner, not sure about the pit boss....My buddy flips them and loves em, I have not tried them yet as I love the Chigger Craw and Hawk Hawg...

awesome, thanks for the tips, this is a technique that im going to try a lot this year as i normally never do it so all tips help. I know how to flip, just using the right size terminal is what i have been worried about!

TROKAR 5/0 Flipping Hook is my choice.  What ever hook you use put the largest hook that will fit into the bait.
