Budget Rod And Reel

Featured Replies

Kind of on a budget right now with a lot of renovations and stuff going on but was looking to grab a new rod and reel for a decent price and so

far have come up with the following.

Pfluger President 6935

Berkley Lightning Rod Shock 6'6 medium

And spooling on some 30lb PowerPro

I mostly like to fish in the slop but have another combo for open water that has worked well in the past. I haven't purchased much other than loads of lures in the past couple years so any advice would be appreciated. As for the fish here, I'm Southern Ontario so the bass don't get much bigger than 3-5lbs though I also want something for spring pike fishing.

thanks :)

Get the 6930 size reel and maybe change the braid to 10-15# test, maybe a little higher if because you said you like to fish heaver cover. Just change the leader size as needed for whatever you intend on using that day. Other than that, good set up for a budget, It's actually similar to my set up because I'm on a budget too.

Rod- Shimano Clarus or Convergence, Abu Garcia Vengeance

Reel- Pflueger President or Mitchell 300 Pro

Line- 15# Power Pro brain with a 12# flouro leader

Alright, I'll try that out instead. On that note, was just out on the mouth of a creek crappie fishing and caught a few, wonderful day.

I can get the Convergence but don't see the other two in stock. $10 more is it that much better?

My every day carry rod in the back of the Jeep is a Shimano Convergence and Pflueger President. I tend to put 30# Sufix 832 on it.. Good enough to get the job done, cheap enough that if someone breaks into Eileen it's not a huge loss.

I use it for bass and pike and works excellent for both of them. Leader optional, though I paid the price a few times with those pike.

There's an Abu Vengeance on here for 30 bucks.

Plueger President is a great reel, and so is the abu garcia Orra S which I have been super impressed with. You can find them for some great prices online, and the features included in the reel are impressive...I purchased one as a back up to a back up, and I now have 2 of them in the 30 size, and would like to add another in the 20 size if I can find one.....I couldn't find one negative comment on the reel on any forum or retailer which says alot as most people go on sites to complain...

The President is a proven reel and so is the Mitchell as someone above mentioned..Heck, a Mitchell Avocet is a reel that will go forever, and they can be found super cheap. Shimano reels in the $40-$50 are fantastic as well.

If the Convergence is available get that. I always advise against lightning just because I have broke two of them on fighting fish. The first one was a 6lb Largemouth, it snapped the tip off and the other broke on a 10lb Cat which three guides broke off halfway down the rod.

Your President/Lightning Rod combo is what I have on board for guests to use even though I spool it with 8lb Berkley and have them use it more for open water.  When I fish slop I want to use a baitcasting outfit as I feel that I can get more winching power that way.  I just started one of my grandsons on the following rig from Cabelas.

Pflueger Trion (TRION3WLP)  On sale @ $50

Berkley Lightning Rod 7' MH (LR701MHC) $40

30lb Power Pro $30

Ahh well I don't need a broken rod, I'll go with the Convergence and Pfluger 6930 then :)
