Flouro Leader.

Featured Replies

So I'm fishing gin clear water and think that a leader might be needed so I was using one about 3 feet long and I accidentally reeled in to far and casted and it got hung up on my guide and snapped the knot a double uni is my leader to long or can you use a small swivel? Not to familiar fishing clear water

I don't fish a lot of leaders but I think the protocol is to have the knot in between the first guide and the reel. Also, I would use a Double Albright Knot. Aaron Martens knows his stuff.

I never never never never never never never never never never reel my line to line knot into the guides

you dont need 10ft of leader. I may go 3-4ft at the very most

I tie leaders from time to time and I make them pretty long.4-6ft.  I use the alberto knot and they go through my guides all the time. I have been doing this for years and I have yet to break a guide. To the OP, were you fishing with standard guides or micro guides?

It's a diawa spinning medium was throwing a light spinner and the last two guides are aluminum, it didn't break the guide, broke the knot. Lol just bought the lure from bps. I was using a double uni.

^^^ same here. I usually pull out my wing span worth of fluoro and use the Alberto knot. Never had it hang up yet. You can trim it super close on both sides. I mean like 1-2mm close. You can add a drop of supper glue for added security to the knot.

I use a 6' leader in clear water. I just trim the knot close, never had an issue.

Was just a bad knot. My leaders always go through the guides with no issue. They just make a little click click as it hits the guides but they don't diminish casting.

Are you sure it hung up on the eye and broke? Or is it possible the bail flipped over and that caused your line to break from shock?

Definitely the guide I heard it hang and snap. Oh well I like the idea of putting a drop of superglue on the leader. I might just retire that pole and pick up a new one cause I don't like how the last two guides are aluminum and no coating... Just looks like a catch point for the knot.

Just because they are aluminum guides with no insert doesn't make it bad and is not the issue. Some higher end rods come with simar guides with no insert. I have a GLX flipping stick with titanium spring guides. That is a very expensive rod and has strictly metal guides. The deal with that rod though is you can't bend or break the guides. I have stepped on it multiple times while on the deck and they snap back in place. I suppose you could jump up and down on them and nothing would happen but I don't plan on trying that any time soon.

I have never seen (or heard of) a rod with guides of various styles... are you sure you haven't got two of your guides that have lost the ceramic rings?  Frames without insert rings will certainly catch a knot cast through them.

My leaders are generally about six feet long to start with.  Obviously they get shorter as I re-tie.  I usually use the Stren knot for leader to braid, but occasionally use the double Uni.  I've had no problems with the knot going through the guides.

I also use long leaders (7'+).  It goes through the guides with no problem.
