Youth Rod For Bass Fishing?

Featured Replies

hi all!  Sorry i have been MIA for a bit....broken truck...sold bass boat.  BUT that is a different thread lol.

I am looking for a rod for my 7 yr old son.  I am quite frustrated with what i can find....it isn't much.

The cheapies i bought him when he started out and his UL are slow parabolic rods.  When he goes back the tip loads for him which helps him cast.

Do you all know of a rod series that is 5'6 pistol grip medium action?  Have any of you bought rods for kids?  I can't find any short glass rods anymore.

I can't see a 4' 49lb kid using a full size bass casting rod.  If nothing else, the handles on my rods are just too long for his arms.  I could use spinning but for accuracy right now i really prefer to pair him with a push button reel.  (or i'm getting him out of trees all day)

sincerely,

Frustrated Dad

BPS might have one of the cranking' sticks in a pistol grip

Another vote for the Ugly Stick.....Short rods are hard to find. The Ugly Sticks are the only ones in glass and I have an older Berkley lighting that are graphite. They make the newer ones (both Ugly sticks and Lightnings) in 5'6" and 6' in M and the longer one in M and MH in both spinning and casting. My son uses a MH 6' it is a good length.

Ugly sticks are heavy.  I would think that some fairly light weight 6' medium action spinning rod would be a better choice.  After a few sessions of drive way practice, he should get the hang of a spinning reel  --   or get one of those  underspin reels,  Zebco, Diawa and Pfllueger all make them.

If Wayne does not get you covered, I would go with the 6' Berkely Lightning rod in Medium.  It may be a little long for him today, but unless he is a hobbit, he will grow into it shortly and can use it for years to come.

I really don't find spincast reels to be any more accurate than a spinning reel. A spinning reel will actually be more accurate over time, because he can learn to feather the spool to stop his lure where he wants. I would highly recommend looking at the *** Ambition combos. They're really nice and made specifically for kids.
