Landing Big Fish On My New Rod

Featured Replies

I just bought a st croix premeir 6'6 medium power fast action rod with a pflueger president 6930 reel. I live and fish on the Chesapeake bay. What do you think the biggest fish I can land with the rod. Catfish, rockfish, perch..?

No matter how big we can't control what size fish will bite. I say set your drag on the edge of the test of your line leaving it adjusted so it can take a hard strike and enjoy the fight of the larger fish play him.

If you are out on open water, you can land "almost" any size fish with that rod/reel. But it will also depend on the line that you are using. Don't over think it. Just go out and have fun.

I landed an 8lb flathead cat on a 5'4ul all star rod and a 1000 sized daiwa fuego with 4lb super natural. If the drag is set proper, you can almost land anything.

Very true.

The fish in my avatar is Jack Cravelle, arguably one of the hardest fighting fish there is.  That fish was caught on med spinning rod, 4000 reel and 15# braid.  The key is line capacity, the reel size isn't quite as important because the drag is set for the line.  My supreme 30 has 9# max drag,  a good sized saltwater fish can surpass that setting, as long as the fish is pulling out line your line and knots should not break, that said I still wouldn't lock it down.  It boils down to line capacity and your ability.
