Ascend D10T Or Perception Sport Access 11.5 Kayak

Featured Replies

I am looking into kayak fishing. I am not looking to spend a ton of money and I found two that look perfect for $399. I read online that the Ascend D10T does not track well and they recommend getting the 12 foot one, but I don’t want to spend the extra money. I have read that the perception sport access kayak tracks pretty well since it is 11.5 feet long. I will be using the kayak in lakes, and in the backwaters of the Mississippi river.

Another kayak I just found was a pelican 120x angler kayak.

If anyone has any thoughts on these kayaks and would like to give me a little input that would be awesome!

Thanks, Lucas

Nobody has any thoughts about these?

My brother-in-law just bought the ascend. Really likes it. Only complaint is the seat gets really hard after sitting for a while. To fix that he is just getting an extra pad to put under him. I think at that price point they are probably all comperable. Personally all the pelican yaks that I have seen just seem really cheap to me. That being said I have never paddled one. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the information! yeah I also read that the pelicans are kind of cheap. I have heard that people get water in the inside of theirs from the midline where both the top and bottom come together.

Haven't fished either of these, but by looking at the two, I like the layout of the D10T better for fishing. Not a big fan of the foot stops in the Perception. My old yak had something similar...

That is what I love about the D10T, the layout. It looks like it has so many options for custom rigging.

I have a D10T, and it is overall a pretty good kayak, but the seat is terrible. It's difficult to get the bottom to stay in place, and doesn't give you much support. I adapted a camping chair to mine (a GCI Everywhere Chair, but it wasn't easy) and I'm very satisfied now. It is a slow kayak for paddling, which you would expect because it is short and wide. But it is very stable and tracks fairly well for its size. I added two side handles to mine, which makes handling easier, and I use the two-wheel cart that plugs in the scupper holes, which makes moving it easy (it's no lightweight). I carry it on top of my Equinox, strapped right-side-up to the factory roof rack, and that works well. BTW, adapting the chair involved cutting the front leg and fabricating one from PVC pipe. If anyone's interested I could provide photos.

Great information! I have heard bad things about the seat, but just like you did, I could change it out. How does it handle in chopping and rough water?

I weight 185, and the D10T handles mild chop on the Potomac without any problem for me. Rides high enough in front to keep mostly dry.

My girlfriend started in an Ascend D10T and it did just fine for rivers, lakes, as well as marsh.

She did, however, have trouble keeping up with myself and the guys due to it being a bit slower. However, it is super stable. Her little brother can even stand up in it.

To fix the seat, I put 4 long strips of industrial grade Velcro down to keep the seat from sliding forward. It also helps to keep the back supportive.

I would personally not even consider the second for two reasons...

1.) The foot area

2.) No real back support.

The D10T is a good yak. If it were me, I would save 100 dollars more and buy a Perception Sport Pescador 12 for 499. She has graduated to that and loves it. It even floats my big butt.

You really can't go wrong with either. Hope you enjoy it!

thanks for the information. I have been thinking about saving even 150 more dollars and getting the Ascend fs12t.

How did it do? also that is a nice price for the pescador. The main yaks I am still looking at is the Perception pescador, Eagle Talon, and the Ascend FS12T.

it was a lot of fun. we did two float trips on two different creeks this weekend. saturday we went 12 miles and sunday afternoon we went 4 miles.

before i went out i did this.

storage is good. original seat is crap. it drafts super shallow i was floating over sandbars i could reach down and touch. i did not try to stand. it might could be done but it is not the most stable craft. it paddles pretty easy and trackes straight.

it fits my needs perfet, but i wanted a small water boat for creeks and rocky rivers and rapids.

my brother in law has the ascend fs128t the fs12t big brother. he can stand and walk back and forth on his. it is much better suited to bigger slow water fishing.

from what you describe your needs i think it would be the best match.
