Adjusting A Baitcaster For A Kvd Frog,or Any Lite Lure

Featured Replies

I'mjust getting into baitcasting this year.I was throwing a KVD frog yesterday, all I was getting was some bad back lashes.I'm using a Quantum reel,I believe it's got either 50 or 65lb braid on it.I bought it from a guy,& it came spooled.Do I adjust the mags or the big knob,to avoid back lashes?I'm not having any trouble with heavier baits, just with the litghter baits.

The rod is very important also, but you have 2 choices... Cast control and brakes... Check another frog type bait out.... I have seen them a lot in the heavier weights....that may help...

There are other factors also...

Have you read the thread about properly setting up a baitcasters in the rod, reels, lines, an knots sub forum? That would probably answer most (if not all) of your questions and solve your problems.

Braid can be difficult to learn to cast with. Suggest that you tie the line to something and walk 50 paces, then tape one wrap of plumbers Teflon tape one the spooled line on the reel, then wind the line back onto the reel.

The tape will prevent a major backlash.

Your reel may need to be cleaned and serviced by a professional technician like site sponsor DVT to perform properly. The adjustments are easier with a good functioning reel.

You adjust both. First the tension knob. When you depress the thumb bar, adjust the fall rate so that as soon the bait touches the ground, the spool stops moving. Next the mag breaks. Adjust them high at first. If its numbered 1-10 adjust to a 6. Attempt to cast. If you backlashed, then adjust higher. If you didn't then adjust to 5. Keep doing so until you find the setting that allows to get some nice distance with no backlash. Mag settings for frogs usually are anywhere between 1-4. Hope that helps. Good luck.
