What About Hot Water?

Featured Replies

We all know about what happens when the water temps are cold. Here in NC that is when the cold means water is about 40-45 degrees. But what about in the summer months? I know bass with either "sun" or seek cover depending on how hot it gets. However there is a part in the corner of one of our local ponds that hit 90 the other day. Will the water ever get so hot that the bass will avoid it completely?

I've caught bass in what feels like bath water, but always in the shade or weeds. If they have access to more comfortable water I wouldn't expect to find them hanging out in unusually warm water like that.

Most bass will become sluggish when the water gets over 80 degrees.  Here in GA, you can catch them in the summer, but it's almost as tough as winter.  The fish are deep, deep, deep, and only come to shallow water at night when it cools off..  In the north, summer bassin' is not quite as tough as down this way, but the same rules apply.  What I've read is when the temp gets up there, fish slow because unless you land a bait on the fish's nose, he won't eat it if he has to chase it.

The only hogs I ever caught in the South in the summer were on shiners (live) in FL.

There is about an acre of thick moss in one of the local ponds that gets in the high 80's. I felt the moss and it was hot to the touch. Just below it (about 3 inches) felt like about 75. Top water was the key!!!!!!!
