What Reel Should I Put On My Avid?

Featured Replies

I purchased a 7ft MF Avid a few days ago and it arrived today now I need a reel for it. I'm purchasing a 5.4 Tatula from Valley Sports for my Crankbait rod. Should I pair the Avid with a higher gear ratio Tatula or another reel?

The rod will be used for jigs Trigs and things of that nature

I like higher gear reels for T-rigs, soft plastics, etc. I prefer 7.1:1, would love an 8.x:1 ratio, but my best and favorite reels are my two Chronarch 50e models that are 6.4:1.

So if you like the Tatula, you'll probably love the Tatula R in a higher ratio.

My .02.

I would go with another Tatula

How do like the Avid? I remember your rod thread. As far as your reel question goes, if you like the Tatula then get another. The speed ratio is up to your preference.

I haven't actually got to fish with the avid and it is killing me lol

No Tatula here, but the only complaint I remember reading about them was an ergonomic one.  If you like the one you have, then I'd get another or a Type R depending on how much you want to spend.  Whether or not the Type R is worth the extra coin is up to you.  Some say no............some say yes.

I had planned on the Tatula being my next reel, but couldn't pass up a T3 1016 for less than $200 from TW.

Was there something about the Avid that you didn't like?

In my other thread I was looking at what St. Croix rod to get and decided to go with the Avid. The only problem I have with the rod is that I don't have a reel for it lol.
