Hey guys,

Just moved to Salisbury, MD for the next the 3 months and was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on places to launch a kayak/fish for some bass. I have google mapped the area and there looks to be a ton of water so I'm assuming there must be some good fishing in the area. Thanks for any help/advice in advance!

Welcome to Maryland Greg!

On your side of the bridge, the many public ponds are bass fishing heaven for you.  I like them all as the bass are usually willing and fairly easy to find along with other species, perfect for kayaks.  Each pond has their own "personality".  Also, if I was you, I'd also buy a Delaware license and fish those waters.

There are many good tidal bass fishing spots near you or within a reasonable drive.  The Nanticoke, Choptank, Pocomoke Rivers, and right in Salisbury's downtown location on the Wicomico River, and most of their tributaries are very good too, that can provide excellent largemouth bass opportunities.

If you don't mind the drive, you can come chase smallmouth and largemouth on the Western Shore rivers.  The Potomac has some great access and plenty of fishable water from your kayak.

Good luck and post some pictures and stories on the ongoing Maryland thread!

Thanks for the info. On google earth, I'm surrounded by just a ton of water so it was a little overwhelming at first but you've narrowed my search. I drive by the Nanticoke everyday and see big grass mats and lilly pads and can't help but think there has gotta be some giants in there Might be time to break out the frog and punchin' gear! I'll post some videos if I have any good outings!

Welcome to the eastern shore Greg. I'm just down the road 30-40 minutes in Delaware. There are quit a few decent ponds in Wicomico county and Sussex county in Delaware.  I too fish out of a kayak.  Try Johnsons on Rt13 as your leaving Salisbury.  Parking lot is on the southbound side of Rt 13.

Awesome, thanks man. I think I'm going to try Atkins pond this saturday and Johnsons' Sunday!

Greg I mixed up Johnsons and Leonards Mill pond. Leonards Mill is the one right off of Rt13 as you leave Salisbury, not Johnsons. They both however are worth fishing.  I have never fished Adkins however it looks like a decent little pond that I will have to try one day. Good luck this weekend.

I fished Johnson's and Leonard's years ago and did pretty well.  I've only fished each one time and meant to get back.  There are so many places to fish on your side of the bridge...I'm jealous  :tongue50: .

My fondest memory about Johnson's was that we were fishing during a rainy day in September, and we were struggling to put together a pattern.  A buddy of mine had a white spinnerbait tied on and tossed it out and backlashed.  He picked out the back lash as we drifted along and his lure was dragging behind the boat but not on the bottom (not much line out) and his lure must have been bouncing up and down like a yo yo, and a nice bass hammered it and he had to pull it in by hand.

A light bulb went off and we both started casting our spinnerbaits and letting them sink to the bottom, then jigged them back hopping them to the boat.  The bass went ballistic and hammered them on just about every cast.  Prior to that, they wouldn't touch a spinnerbait.  All of the bass were decent size and a bad day went to a good day during the final two hours of our day, and we forgot about the all day downpour that we were complaining about until the fish started biting.

It's funny to me how you can discover new ways to fish simply by accident or mistake.

Good luck!

Well guys, I made it out to Leonard's pond this Saturday. I launched around 7:30 and worked the shoreline with a jig, senko, frog and texas rigged zoom zhog. By 12:30-I o clock, I  had about 10 bites, all of which, were less than 12 inches and a few that shook me off that probably didn't measure as well. I was discouraged as I thought the day was ultimately going to be a bust. I started digging into the plano's and pulled out a Z-man Chatterbait with a Yamamoto swim senko trailer both in black/blue. The water was very tannic and there couldn't have been more than 8 inches of visibility so I thought that this setup given the color, vibration and overall larger profile might get me some more bites. To my surprise, after a few casts, I started getting bit and with much better size. I found that 95% of my bites were coming off of submerged wood and ended up with 20 or so bass including a 5 lb 6 oz bass in the last 2 hours of fishing. I'll take it for a first outing and I am excited to try other new water nearby!

Here's a video of some highlights from the day:
