Chumming For Shiners?

Featured Replies

Hey. I'm new to the whole shiner thing but I live on water and I know that they straight up catch bass. And I know they live in the canal I fish. I have a 5' net. My question is how do I consistently catch shiners by chumming with bread? The water has no visibility even with polarized glasses. So how many slices should I throw out and also how long do I wait until I throw into that area? Thanks a lot. Appreciate it

if you can set up a spot light to shine in the water at night, a good chance a lot of bait fish will be attracted to it after a couple hours. after they build up in numbers cast your net on them. i catch alewives like this at smith mtn lake. or perhaps you could buy one of them minnow cages, put the bread in there and toss it out on a rope and come back and check it in a few hours. usually the minnow cage just gets me a tiny bluegill or two. before i leave the lake, i throw the cage in empty off the dock, in a rocky area, usually yields me a couple live crawdads when i return a month or so later...

On a private pond, we fixed a PVC ring (about 15 feet in diameter) and threw dog food in the ring.  The ring kept the bait from dispersing.  Dog food floats so we waited, usually just a few minutes, for the shiner frenzy to start and the water to churn.  Then we either used a cast net or threw an unweighted hook baited with a super small grub.  We cleaned up on shiners and then used them to go after the big boys.  Shiner fishing is definitely a lot of fun!

Thanks for all the replys. About the PVC ring. What exactly is that? I just threw dog food out just now and got nothing. I didn't use the ring and it did scatter. Does that make a difference? I waited for about 2-3 minutes and saw nothing

I fish a lake with a beaver hut that is always covered in 6-10" shiners in the summer, we have always just used tiny (#10-#14) hooks with worm under bobbers to catch them. The best way to do it is to locate a school and fish with small pieces of worm, hooks don't harm them as much as nets do. Don't rule out bluegill as an alternative if you plan on live bait fishing, bass love them too. Just make sure you use circle hooks! Oh and get an aerator to keep them alive in your bucket

My uncle caught bait for a bait shop a while back. I will ask him.

All good suggestions. If your cheap like me, all you need is a 2liter bottle. Cut it in half, take the top half stick it in the bottom half. The top of the bottle where the cap would go should now face inward. Secure the two pieces with clear tape. Throw in some cheese whiz for bait. Alternatives for bait are crumbs and corn. If I'm not clear enough, google soda bottle minnow trap.

Oatmeal plain and wait about an hour and toss your net.
