Treble hooks for DD22 ???

Featured Replies

Just bought a couple of dd22s (hopefully to start collection) . I have been reading a lot on here about them , and how much a lot of you like them. I've never fished one (guess I missed the dd22 bus somehow) , and read somewhere on here that the hooks they come with are no good. Wondering what brand / size hooks to swap 'em out with.

The sureset hooks are the ones that a lot of people, including myself, don't like. To me that have a tendency to get hung up more than most, and I haven't seen them make enough of a difference in getting good hooksets enough to warrant them getting hung up more often.

ive only thrown the a few times, but the hooks have been just fine for me. I may look at changing them though now that im reading this. Im interested in hearing too

Thats what i was thinking, i've never seen a dd22 with sure set hooks on them. I've not had a problem with the hooks that come on them, I should say no problems out of the ordinary. Every hook will get dull eventually,or bent, or some other problem.

I have not had a problem with any of my dd22s out of the package. I would just fish with them and see how you like them and if you need to change them you can do so, but I have never had to change mine(other than replaces some when they get dull)

The Rapala DT baits are the only ones I KNOW come with sure sets. The Norman dd22s are what I'm asking about. Not sure what brand of hook they come with , but I thought (saying I may be wrong) I'd read that their hooks were not great. I'll definitely try 'em anyways , just to save the headache of changing. But if I do need to change , who puts out the best trebles , and what size do yall recommend for that bait.

NO, and you guys are compounding it.  The OP is asking if the DD22 has hooks that need to be replaced.  The respondent states the hook people are grousing about are actually the VMC Sure Set, NOT the hooks on a DD22.  Way over complicating things for this.

In regard to the OP, I've had numerous problems with DD22 hooks, mostly with the bronze variety, which not many come with anymore.  If you look at the hook, you'll see that it is not always soldered down to the point the three hooks part ways to their bend.  The shanks are very often exposed as three separate shanks for a good deal of their length, which in turn, weakens the hook.  I've bent hooks on fish a few times and for that reason change them.  I've been experimenting this year with the Mustad KVD hook on the belly, and a VMC round bend short shank on the tail.  The reason for this is that I've upsized the belly to a #1 and the tail is a #2.  In going to a short shank, the hooks will not foul one another.  You can use Owner ST36, ST41, KVD Elites, VMC 9650 and 9651, Gamakatsu EWG Short shank treble all with success.  It becomes a point of preference.  On a DD22 I like the VMC 9650 for the most part, as it most closely matches the stock hook.

Yall are right, my mistake. I read it and immediately though DT, not DD. Sorry about that.

But just for the record, I don't like the sureset hooks.
