What's With The Behavior Of This Reel?

Featured Replies

I recently purchased a used KVD Burner Baitcasting reel. Its got a 7.0:1 ratio.

Without anything tied to it, it's very smooth. It casts VERY A nicely as well. I'm using it on a 6 ft MH rod for my spinnerbaits.

The problem I'm having is with the general feeling of resistance on the retrieve with my spinnerbaits.

I have tried a KVD Double Willow Razor Blade Spinnerbait and it was tiring to retrieve this bait.

Thinking the issue was with the blades, I tried a Colorado/Willow leaf combo spinnerbait with a hammered finish on the blades and got the same result.

I've thrown spinnerbaits on other rod/reel combos and have never experienced this resistance issue before.

Is it the gear ratio(7.0:1) I'm not used to or what...

The rod im using is a Daiwa Triforce-Z TF-Z 601MHRB-B 6' Med/Hvy 10-20lb 1Pc

Wonder if I just need to slow down my cranking speed because of the ratio of the reel.

It may be the length of the rod, I have the same reel & I use a St. Croix 7'1" MHF & have never experienced this. What type/lb line are you using? Is the spinnerbait within the specs of the rod of is it heavier than spec??

The spinnerbaits I've tried are 1/4 and 3/8 oz.The reel is spooled with 14# test mono

With an increase in reel speed, there is a reduction in torque due to torque multiplication through the gear set. This is felt as more resistance as you have to supply more torque with a faster reel than you do with a slower reel, to get the same torque at the spool (assuming same handle length and spool diameter). So if you're used to slower reels, this could be why. It could also be the length of the rod. Shorter rods require more effort on your part than a longer rod to get an equal torque at the tip.
