Right now I have a Curado on an *** 13 med/hvy

curado is perfect reel, but for punching, you basically need a broomstik. A medium- heavy wont cut it. You need at least heavy. I have a extra heavy, extra fast 7'11 punching rod. you can also use a swimbait rod but it has to load up fast like a extra fast action.

I know irod makes the Bub Tosh punching rod.

@LMB KING - last week was my first punching trip.. So I am definitely open to any suggestions.. So your saying to stick with the Curado , but find a nice extra heavy reel to compliment it ?

Which Curado do you have?  Do you have a price range you're looking to stay within in terms of the rod cost?

Yes, stay with the curado reel if its a 7.1 gear ratio. A 6.1 might work, but it will slow you down a little, so you need to be fast with your hands. I recommend a fast gear ratio like 7.1 and higher. Curado's are work horse reels. 50 pound braid is the minimum i would use. Myself, I use 65 to 80 pound braid, but 50 would get the job done.

Since you're in California I can give you some true advice dealing with a couple of your favorite places (cal delta and clear lake.). You're already addressing the first part, you definitely need a heavier action rod. It's slightly outside of your price range but a Dobyns 805c Champion is a great rod for your heavy flipping. You may be able to find it used local under your budget. For very heavy cover which we have a lot of this rod will put them in the boat. 65+ lb braid and weights 3/4 to 1.5 ounces are right at home on this rod. The rod is a complete brute however it took a while for the balance to get right so it's comfortable to pitch and punch with all day. That reel is perfect for punching. It will go perfectly with the w & m Skeet Reese 7'11punching rod. Also remember to use a long rod, less then 7'10 will not be a good idea for punching even though some companies make shorter rods, those companies don't know how to make punching rods.

I would take a guess that you would know. I'm still laughing over that statement of a punching rod less than 7'10" Is from a company that doesn't know how to make a punching rod. you fish with duckett rods and your laughing at me? dude that's the most garbage rod company ever existed, no wonder why you use a 7'8 for punching. that explains your ignorance. I'm done here. 

 I really don't mind what brand you fish with or what you like, you go fish it and you enjoy it but when you start to lead someone else, whom seems new and they are asking questions. please explain why you need to be at 7'11 or bigger? Curious to read this.

Yea, I mean I punch with 7'6" and 7'11" but I prefer a shorter rod, and you most certainly can use a shorter rod. My question is why couldn't you?

im about to use a 7'1 or a 7'3 to punch, im a bank fisherman and this seems more realistic,

 

fishing in florida you can punch all kinds of stuff from the bank!

My punching rod is 7'6" and always will be. It will make zero difference between 7'6" and 7'11". I have even used a 7' in a pinch when I didnt ecpect to find any matted vegetation on a normally very clean lake, and ended up catching my personal best at 6 pounds using it that day. Rod length isnt AS important as a good rod with the right power rating for your area and line selection obviously.

Fishing mostly in MI, I can suffice with just a heavy action and not have any issues. In the Delta, I doubt i could get away with that.

I have Spiderwire Zillabraid 65lb I had bought on sale a while back and some 3/4 up to 1.5 ounce weights already. Only because it's much easier to pull trigger on the weights ( didn't go tungsten for now ). Just tough to convince myself to go above a certain $$ amount for rod on a technique that I'm just learning. Though I know I will ultimately need a top notch one for the beating they take..
