Dobyns Savvy Cast Rod 7'3" Mag Heavy

 

I plan on pairing it with a Lews mg speed spool with 65lb braid.

 

I want to use this combo for frogging, and pitching some big texas rigged worms or creature baits into the grass.

I haven't had experience with that exact rod. I had the Champion 735 and it was an excellent rod for what you mentioned. Just keep in mind, the  Savvy series is not known for its sensitivity. If that is a concern for other techniques you might want to use you might consider either looking to get the Champion, or another line of rods. If you're really only planning on using it for frogging and flipping/pitching I would not be as concerned and think it would suit your needs just fine.

That's something to think about, i want to make sure i could still feel a bite if i decided to cast my trig into some open water with submerged weeds or other cover.

With frogs, feeling the bite obviously won't be an issue. I don't really flip/pitch in the sense of what most people think, ie: heavy weight, heavy hook, etc. so I'm not positive how those bites feel. My guess is that with braid you should be able to feel the bites, but I don't know for sure so I don't want to give you false information. Typically the Champion is the way to go if you need feel for bottom contact techniques. It's not that the Savvy is not sensitive, there are just better rods out there at that price, IMO.

 

Just a thought. I've been really impressed with Powell rods and, especially since Gary used to be involved with Powell, the two rod companies are similar IMO. The 725 Endurance might be worth a look. Especially when it can be had at fish ranger for 150, I would probably buy that one over the Savvy. If you can go up in price, the Champion 735 would be where my money would go. 

 

Again, I really don't think you'll hate the Savvy and hopefully someone else with experience with the actual rod will be able to chime in to give you more accurate info. But, if you're primarily using it for frogs and flipping/pitching I think it would be a fine rod. 

The reviews that i have read say that it has a nice sturdy backbone with decent sensitivity. As long as the sensitivity isn't terrible i think i should be ok with braid.

Savvy rods are "fine" sensitivity-wise but I would advise against purchasing one because the cork is cheap and the handle starts to look like hell very quickly.

Arv, I think in going to go with the Powell 725

ive got a savvy 735 and use it for frogs with 60# sunline fx2 braid and absolutley love it for froggin

I haven't seen the cork problems on the Savvy series myself, not saying there haven't been any just yet to see it.  I don't think you would be missing any bites during the times you choose to throw a texas rig.  The two rods you're looking at have similar ratings but the actions are different.  The Powell will have less tip to it which could be good, bad or indifferent to you.  Do you have a store you can feel them both in your area?  You can also call Dobyns directly and they can provide some help in your choice.
