Band or Scroll Saw?

Featured Replies

I recently got an airbrush and want to start making some crankbaits.  I was wondering what type of saw you prefer for cutting out the bodies?  Thanks.

I used a band saw, it seemed the scroll saw bounced to much. I think it was the scroll saw that was bouncing, but for sure the band saw worked.

A band saw will probably be more versitle and durable for a shop tool.  But you will likely get more out of an oscilating spindle sander or belt sander where you can free hand your shapes and round your corners/edges for a crank bait.

The biggest difference in a band saw is that you will have to make a few more relief cuts for the blade.

My scroolsaw is only good at gathering dust, while the bandsaw is the real workhorse. A bandsaw will just do a lot more operations, with an 1/8" scrool blade fine cuts are possible and with a 1/2" you can resaw large work pieces.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info.  Looks like I will be getting a band saw.
