So I pulled my pedestal and chair out of my boat and it ripped out the plastic inner lining of the base. I took that piece off and and put the pedestal into one of the other bases. Well, it got stuck to the other base too. There's obviously some problem. I figured WD40 wouldn't work for the long term since it's not really for that.

I was wondering what type of grease or lubricant can be used to make sure this doesn't happen and so that I can take the posts out?

Wd-40

Try a number of lubricants until you find the one that works best.

 

Grease Lightning, WD-40, 3-In-1 Oil and Silicone spray will all work to some degree.

I use white lithium grease.  It's available in a tube, like toothpaste.  Use a brush for applying soldering flux, readily available at any hardware store.

 

Use a wire brush to remove all the white corrosion from the aluminum post, then apply a thin film of the lithium grease using the soldering brush.  A little goes a long way.

 

It will last longer than WD-40.

 

Be sure to do the seat's post as well, unless you like the sound of a squeaking seat.

 

White lithium grease is available in a spray, but it tends to be messy.  It also has to be shaken vigorously to mix the contents completely.  The brush allows you to spread the lubricant uniformly.

Do you think I should sand down the parts at all?

White lithium is the way to go.

If there is a build up of corrosion on the pedestal, you can sand it down pretty easily. Don't go over aggressive on the grit though. It'll come off fairly quickly. Might try some steel wool first.

I'm smiling to myself after reading of your problem and remembering one fishing trip in my younger days where a mighty hook-set leaning on a freshly greased bow pedestal seat sent me ass-over-tea-kettle to the back of my boat!
