I bought a mepps aglia size 3 spinner. The website says this is great for bass. I haven't had a bite on it yet, anyone have any input on techniques or if I'm just wasting my time.

For smallmouth in moving water. 

They are a staple for white bass - would hook an occasional LMB with them.  I would argue that they are a good choice for beginners on a spinning outfit, especially if you're not targeting "just bass" as many of us do.  I've seen novices catch fish on them when nothing else would produce.

 

As far as technique, it's pretty much cast and reel, cast and reel.  Vary the speed of your retrieve, but don't go too slow as they get hung up quite easily.

much better choices if you are targeting largemouth. They also tend to get hung up a lot. Dynamite for panfish though...

I've used Panther Martins quite a bit for smallies, but as others have said if it's just bass you want, it's best to go with something else

I do not know if they still make them but there used to be an in line bass spinner that was weedless. It was called a "Snaggless Sally" and I believe it was made by Heddon. My Dad caught many bass on one and another called a "Hawaiian Wiggler" which was also an in line weedless bass spinner. I think they were both made by Heddon or maybe Fred Arbogast. 

I've used a size 3 blue fox spinner in gold color in my home river for smallmouth.  I like slow rolling it close to the bottom or burning it fast then killing it for a few seconds so it falls slowly, the strikes happened when I stopped reeling.  I caught a good number of rock bass on them too.

Was hammering the smallies and rock bass at a river the other day on a spinner. Other than that, I don't use them too often.

Oh us, every fish loves them. Try different retreavel speeds for different fish

Yes, they work for LMB with spinning gear. It was one of the first lures I used regularly when I started fishing last July.

You MUST MUST MUST have a high quality swivel above the inline spinner or else your line will twist horribly.

I actually stopped using them because it would twist up my braid so badly.
