My first foil crankbait

Featured Replies

Hey guys this is my first foil paintjob.Man,it was a headache.Tell me what you think.Iknow I still gotta few things to work on.crankbaits.jpg

Hey looks good to me.....just hope the fish like it as well... ;D....i've never tried painting any of my own baits yet......is it really that difficult..? I watched basscenter the other day and on bass tech they showed how to spray paint baits and also used a air brush to paint em...looks like lots of fun.

Got a question? Is there any way to take my old crankbaits remove the bait and paint them myself..??

Yes,That is what most of my paintjobs are done on.There are probally more than one way of doing this but,I start removing hooks and o-rings.Then I take a paded fingernail buffer and just get all of the exsisting clearcoat dulled. Then I tape off the lip and primer the bait. Most all plastic cranks are simple you have to be careful with wooden baits to make sure you don't damage the seal.

That looks so crazy!!! What did u use to paint. Airbrush?? model paints??

If its foil i dont no what it is?? explain please

Alright,an old school angler came to me with a crankbait that hardley had much of a paintjob left. However there was enough to see what it was. This color is suposed to be awesome in the spring on my home lake.I finally figured out how to do it.First I applied an ultra thin foil over some tooling(scales). Then I applied a waterbased clearcoat, scuffed it and used chartuese worm dye over the foil area. Then clearcoated again.Scuffed that and painted(airbrush model acrylics). Then applied epoxy top coat. The lure may not be that attractive to the fisherman, but I am very anxious to see what the fish think. The original lure was a custom made job from Iowa.I don't now who did it.
