My First Jig

Featured Replies

I've had this jig in my tackle box for a few months, just not sure when to use it. I have it paired with a green pumpkin baby paca craw. I understand I basically just bounce it off the bottom as I retrieve it, but not much more, like what water conditions to throw it in

That natural color would probably be pretty good in clear water. I dont fish in clear water, and a black/blue jig is the only color I use. What size is the jig? The baby paca craw may be a bit small. Not to sure on their size. You can jig, drag, or swim that thing. So many ways to fish a jig. Fish it around grass, timber, weeds, rocks, banks. Anywhere!!

It's the 1/8th ounce Booyah Baby Boo

I mainly fish smallmouth in the upper Potomac and last Sunday I fished a jig just like this for the first time.  Mine was an 1/8 ounce Strike King Bitsy Bug jig and for a trailer I put half of a 3" YUM Mighty Bug on it.  I've never really fished a jig like this in the river and was really impressed with how well it came through all the junk on the bottom (even in current).  I'm sure this will be no surprise to people who fish lots of jigs, but I could feel everything.  That's a rock, that's a log, that's branches, THAT'S A FISH!!  And I just couldn't get it hung up.

I normally fish t-rigged plastics with 1/16 or 1/8 unpegged bullet weight.  Definitely better feel with the jig and no hang ups.

Try upsizing that jig to a 5/16 oz paired with a Rage Tail chunk trailer. Colors dont have to match. I fish with this size 99% of the time, and it still catches me big fish.
