Pfleuger Reel Noise

Featured Replies

I have 2 presidents, a 30 & a 35.

The 30 is SUPER quiet, i'd say zero noise. The 35 is considerably louder. I'd stop short of saying it was a "Grindy" noise, and the performance of it is still super smooth, and I can spin the handle with little to no resistance. But, there's the noise.  I hear a  "ccccCCCcccc, ccccCCCcccc, ccccCCCcccc...." when I turn the retrieve and have a lure on.

Is this just a bearing issue that can be resolved with a re-greasing? I know typing a noise online may or may not be very helpful, but I'm trying to get a little insight before opening this thing up and trying anything.

Thoughts?

Check and make sure there is no line trapped under the spool. Then take the rotor off and clean out all of the grease you can see with a Q-tip. Snap a few pictures of the reel and then start taking it apart SLOWLY. Carefully clean all of the grease out with a Q-tip. Pop the handle bearings out while you are in there. Soak the bearings in some break cleaner or parts cleaner for a couple minutes then allow them to air dry for 30 minutes. Put one drop of oil on the inside of the bearings and re-install. Put the gears back in and put 2-3 drops of grease on each gear. Now put the reel back together. Put another drop of oil on each outer side of the bearings when it is together before you put the handle back on.

Your reel should be much smoother and much quieter.

Remember, grease gears and oil bearings.Don't mix that up or you'll be in there cleaning them again. I like quantum hotsauce for both, but ardent butter grease and oil will work as well if that is all you can find.

Seeing as it's worse when retrieving and under pressure I'd look at the rotor. Make sure it is clean inside, securely bolted and has a light film of grease on the rim. Look for any wear spots where it mat be rubbing. This is all shots in the dark, but without seeing it...
