"Guide" question

Featured Replies

well, guys, i got the "fishing fever" cooled a little last week, so, today, it's back to the shop, 'taking perfectly good rods & screwing them up' - just so i can have split grips on them. LOL

i think i'm going to fix the bulk of the rods, then, go back, re-wrap, put epoxy like it should be (as opposed to one big Glop on top of crooked wraps.  ;D) & generally try to make them look presentable.

but, as for topic of this post - i've got a st croix avid AC70MF, that i bought to compare st croix w/some of the other rods i have.  it's really a nice rod - sciii graphite, fuji ecs reel seat & above the hook keeper, it has "USA" DI08858 written on it.  it also has "made in the USA written below the specs.  the handle is not "humped"- it actually is smaller in the middle than ends, & it has a really large fore grip.

i'm assuming this is an older rod, but it's in great shape.

anyway, i want to take the guides off & make it a spiral wrap.

soooo, do i use the same number of guides (it has 9 plus tip, now.)

would these same guides be ok to use w/spiral wrap?

do i leave the first wrap where it is & just move others?

is there any reason why this rod wouldn't make a good candidate for spiral wrapping? (btw, it's matte finish)

thanks

I've only built with new components so far but asked almost the same question before...

Having not done it before I would be more inclined to say put the guides where they were, so the old finish marks don't show. If you are satisfied with the current guide placement in static testing, just flip all but the butt guide and tape on guides and bumper and check for line clearance then wrap and finish.

If you carefully get all the finish off and the blank cleans up without showing the old finish marks, it would be just like building from scratch. (except the handle)

Oh- you will also need to buy a bumper guide.  ...lol

The simple spiral set-up recommends setting up the rod just like a guides on top then rotating all but the last guide and putting the bumper 1/2 way between the last guide and the first 180 guide. Your rod is already set up with guides on top so in theory all you need to do is rotate the guides and add the bumper.

I have not tried this ::)

I agree with Flechero :) Do a static test before wrapping and finishing to be sure you get a good load distribution.

I changed a BPS rod to a spiral wrap but I replaced all the guides and respaced them. The rod blank actually cleaned up fairly well. Not quite the same as the simple spiral but what the heck now it is a custom rebuilt. ;D ;D If it blows up it won't be the end of the world 8-)
