"split" winding check

Featured Replies

i know you guys must think i'm a complete dufus, but, this really is a serious question.

since i'm using existing cork & not adding new, i don't have the opportunity to put winding checks at the end of cork before wrapping.  ...which leads to question,,, is there some time of a "split" or wrappable (I know there's no such word,..probably no such product either! LOL) or Anykind of check i can put on the end of cork before i wrap?  ...anything to make it look a little more neat before i start "re-doing" the "re-dos"   ....cause i Sure Don't Want to have any Re-doing of the Re-Done!  Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

and, btw, ReelMech ...Thanks for the marbelizing post ...that would really be the bomb on some of these things.

Just Trying.  I'm not a big fan of winding checks..  What I use in place of it is this.  I do about 20 wraps of a colorful thread in front of the cork.  Then I do an epoxy winding check.  What this does is makes a smooth slide from the top of the cork to the blank.  All you do is gob it on there and your rod turner will smooth it out for you.  I use the thread colors to differentiate rods from each other.  For example.  Blade rods I use metallic green,  Jerkbait rods I use metallic red, Crank rods silver metallic etc etc.

t mike - hey, what a Great idea.    ..THAT'S why i like you guy's input.  i'm able to get all the little tricks that you had to learn the hard way ...different colors for different purpose rods opens a whole new ball game.

thanks

justtrying,

I also skip the winding checks.  I have used them on a couple rods but actually think I'll be cutting them off.  I used thread on a few... matched the wrap of a single foot guide, just as an accent... and that is only if I have a slight gap in the cork/blank.  On most of them I have reamed the grip carefully enough that there is no space and no need for thread, winding check or epoxy ramp.

In answer to your original question, you can take a winding check and cut it w/ a razor blade and glue it back together on your rod.  If you do this, I would get one that is larger than the OD. of the rod and trim to fit... normally they stretch a little to fit snug and if you cut one like that, you won't get it back together!  ...lol

justtrying,

On a new build I use wind checks. I use them for keeping water out from under the edges of the grips and a finished look. However on your redo's it is difficult to get the check removed with out breaking it or having to cut it.

I like to keep a spool or two of metallic black A size thread handy. I will make a few wraps and then build my epoxy finish ramp much like T-Mike does.

I have also used black, blue, and silver-aluminum pigment and colored the ramp epoxy, and used just the epoxy to finish the ends of my cork.

Tight Wraps!   :)
