New Baitcast Rod

Featured Replies

Hey guys. I need a new baitcasting rod for my lews speed spool. I am looking on tackle warehouse so I can save some money. I am looking at the Lamiglass Bass Excel II. I am just a little iffy. I really like the looks of it and I saw one good review. There aren't any other reviews that I've seen.

Therefore I'm hesitant because it seems not many people have purchased them. Please give me some recommendations from Tackle Warehouse ONLY. Just because of the sale and I have a tight budget. About $87. So any recommendations are appreciated.

And if anyone knows about the Bass Excell II, please let me know. Thanks!

Sorry I never tried one. Abu Garcia makes dependable rods for a reasonable price. Vendetta2 under 100 bucks. I personally do not have one but a buddy of mine has a few of them and thinks I'm crazy for spending what I do on rods. My advice is get the best rod you can afford and from whoever has the best warranty! By the way, great choice going with Less!

Lews

A 7'1" M *** Black would be $85 during the 4th of July sale. The 7'3" would be like 9 bucks more I think.

I only have experience with the older, orange, Excel rods.  They are very good rods that get overlooked by most people.  In general, Lamiglas makes very good rods, designs their own blanks and rolls most of their blanks in WA.  The Excel II rods aren't made in WA but I'm sure Lami designed the blanks.  I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Lamiglas rod if that's what you want.  I have about 8 custom rods built on Lamiglas blanks and will continue to use them for builds.

Ya Cgrinder I looked the *** black actually. You think that's better than the lamiglass? Anything for 99.99 would be perfect because of the $15 bucks off.

I can't say, as I have never used a Lamiglas. However I can say that I have an *** Black and I am very happy with it, especially considering the reasonable price. If $87 is your hard limit, I don't think you can do better from TW.

Have you tried the Fenwick HMX? I'm going to be picky. I just don't wanna get something, not like it, and have to be that guy that returns everything. Ya know? I just wanna go through all of my options at TW

Also I forgot to add that I'm going to use mostly 1/2 oz lures. Like spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and jigs. So ya I might just go with the ***. But keep the input coming, I've got until the 8th when the sale ends.

I haven't, but I probably wouldn't pick it over the ***. I handled the new HMG's and put reels on them at Bass Pro but I was not impressed. They felt heavy and I didn't care for the all-TAC handle.

If you're going with 1/2 oz lures, you might want the MH ***.

Ya I know. I was just mentioning that. Because you stated the medium. And I need a medium heavy. I'll probably just go with the 6' 7" MH *** Black. Thanks for the help. I'll just keep taking input until tomorrow night.

Hey bbodkin, you probably saw my video on the Excel IIs on YouTube. For your techniques and style, I would recommend a 4 or 5 power (if you like more backbone, go with the 5). I have two models right now (736C and 705 Glass) and are thorourghly impressed with the blanks. The 736C is a very stiff rod, so I use it for chatterbaits.

Speaking of Tackle Warehouse's sale, now is the time to buy a rod. The Excel II would run you $85, so it's right in your price range. For other brands, compare it to Lew's IM7 Speed Stick, or the Shimano Compre 6'8" MH. I think you'll be pleased with the Excel II, but always shop around!

Ya the benefit from the Excel II is it can cast lighter lures. It's a 1/4-1. And it's 7' which I prefer over the 6' 7". Also the silver on the *** just drives me crazy for some reason. But before I buy the lamiglass, I want someone who has owned or does own one to give me their opinion.
