Homemade Livewell

Featured Replies

I think I'm gonna just take a 5 gallon bucket put a wire mesh top over its and tie to sit in the water of my kayak, any better ideas?

Should work or you can get a battery powered aerator.

I built a livewell using PVC pipe, green plastic mesh, zip-ties, and noodls for floatation. The lid is a little bigger than the frame so it sits on top of the noodles -- I tie a string around it to keep it closed if I have a fish in it. Works great, except it has a lot of drag and makes me work hard to tow it in my Kayak. Still looking at ways to reduce drag, but overall, I'm happy.

I made this one using a 52qt cooler, a Bait Saver Aerator kit with a 500gph bilge pump, and a couple of bubble boxes. It's got two overflow tubes so that I can leave the "fill" pump running if I want or I can turn it off and just use the bubble boxes to provide oxygen to my fish. A little Rejuvenade in the water and a bit of ice here and there to control the water temp in the hotter summer months and all is good. I've had 22lb of largemouth in there all day with no issues.

Not my image, but I made one of these with almost the exact same materials, albeit mine is a little larger in diameter and a ft. taller...

Collapses down to 8" for easy transport.

I also did the pvc box method. Then I bought a old school gym cinch bag with the white string. Put it around the box and zip-tied pool noddles to the top. I just drop the fish right down in. Don't get much drag either I am using it in a float tube though that might have something to do with it. Tubes move slower than kayaks.

A cooler with just a aerated does the job
