The above Lew's reels are very close in price - for those of you who have fished both , what are your deciding factors in selecting one over the other ?

OK , I will rephrase another way : The Tournament MG has magnetic only braking, a larger reel size and all of the gear ratios available ... The Tournament Speed has both magnetic and centrifugal force braking , smaller line capacity and only 6:4:1 and 7:1 gear ratios available for $30 more than the Tournament MG ... Am I missing any details why the Tournament Speed Spool is more expensive than the MG ?

I believe the handle and spool are different and some clicking adjustments maybe. The dual braking is the big one. I like cent. brakes personally, so for me it would be the TS. These are kinda like comparing the E series Citica & Curado. Very similar base performance with one being just a little more refined.

I have the Tournament Speed spool and I like the size of the reel.  The TSS does have a clicking spool tension knob (I don't see much benefit in this, as when I adjust the spool tension it's barely a click) and the dual brakes.  I like the dual brakes lets you fine tune it a bit better.  They both have 14lbs of drag.  The size of the TSS is pretty close to my BPS PQ.

Thanks - I agree ... A clicking spool tension knob is not much use (for me) compared to say a star drag .

If I needed something larger or with a slower gear ratio I would leap over the Tournament MG to a BB1 or SuperDuty .

What he said but the Tournament TS1 has a a lighter shallower machined spool than the MG, making more of a difference with casting lighter lures. I would pick the Tournament for this reason as well as dual Braking!! A much more refined reel for most uses.
