[Suggest] A Top Water

Featured Replies

What is your favorite top water lure? (who makes it, price, where you bought, color?)

River2Sea Spittin' Wa Frog in the color Poison (black with some blue markings).  I bought it from TW for about $10

Under what circumstances will you throw any type of top water lure?

Always first thing in the morning (a buzzbait), but anytime I see lily pads or other vegetation at or near the surface.

What do you throw when there's vegetation underneath the surface?

I will throw a white or black Cavitron buzzbait, or a spook-type bait.

What do you throw when there is duckweed or lily's on top?

A frog.  50% of the time it is the River2Sea Spittin Wa frog, after that it is a mixture of a Snag Proof kicker frog or the Boze Sumo frogs.

Are there any top water lures you've tried that you do NOT suggest?

I am not a fan of the Heddon Torpedoes.

Fellas!

Much appreciated for the revival of this topic! Since this has some interest, I'll make another one in a little bit. I'll probably do, buzzbait or muddy water bait? Something good!

Any suggestions?

I'll set-up a format similar to this one.

Questions to Consider:

  • Yamamoto Tate Pencil 100 ($6.98 DSG)

  • I generally have one tied on 90% of the time during postspawn.

  • Tate Pencil

  • If the grass is sparse, I throw the Tate Pencil, if it's thick grass or pads, the Booyah Pad Crasher gets the nod.

  • The Savage Gear Top Prey 100 is pretty, but it doesn't walk very easily. It does sit nice and vertical, and the feathered treble is nice... But it just doesn't walk easy.

Heddon Spittin image, I liked the larger profile. I bought it to fish a pond which had no shad, just gill crappie and perch. Seems to be a hot item for me, but I am probably the only one throwing it too.

In those spur of the moment fish jumps, drop current rod grab topwater rod and cast. Try and remember what bait it is while the lure travels lol!

I like a wake bait, Mann's 1 minus works for me.

Light patches of pads get a floating worm, the heavy stuff gets a soft or hollow frog.

I would say stay away from less durable baits just to save money if you have the chance of catching toothy critters as well.
