What�s the deal with rod making?

I have never heard of this before (I'm new at all this)   When I was a kid I broke the handle off of a rod and I shortened it because I couldn't afford a new on from Kmart.  

You guys got curious is there a thread or site with pictures?

PS, the 3 rode I have right now are all over 20 years old... and so are the reals, I guess I really should update... :)
