Hand carved lure that works !! HELP

Featured Replies

Around 2 years ago i hand carved a lure that to me, had every feature i wanted. I painted it and set hooks in, the only thing left to do was test it out. And that i did.

I have never seen anything that looks like this topwater bait.

And it works  ;D!!

I was thinking about showing it to a lure making company and seeing if there was any way of production. But i am not sure on how to go about it. Who to talk to, who not to talk to, and what to look for in producing a quality product. If anyone has any information to help me out, it would be greatly appricated.

Thanks

-Casey

This is a cut throat business if you show your idea to a lure manufacturer and they like it they will produce it themselves. Simply telling them your idea means they will go and do it before you. I know. I told a lure rep my idea for a bait with a harder more dense head so that it wouldn't tear up by the hook. I told this guy this at a lure tackle show here in Jacksonville. I even told him my idea was to name them Hard Heads. Well one year later I see Mann's came out with Hard Nose lures. Couldn't believe it.

So keep your ideas to yourself or those who you share them too might just do something about them and of course leave you out..

I have no idea on how you can turn your idea into a business other then making them yourself and selling them on line.

Although it wouldnt be exacltly easy to carve a replica, i could try..

To bad its not easier than this haha

not sure how to do it but copyright it.  If you own the rights, you can sue if they rip your idea off :)  That holds weight when you approach businesses.

I've seen this discussion before on another board.

The bad thing about copyright is that all I have to change is one feature and it is a new lure.  Look at what happened to Sweet Beavers, Chatterbaits, Red hooks, etc., etc..  I hate to say it, but it happens.

It is very hard to market and sell a new lure, especially if the design is radical.  Your one shot is to get a pro to fish it (and that is not very likely).

Look at your lure again and see if you can reproduce it easily.  Make jigs to bend the wires.  Make templates to cut it out.  Clip alligator clips to boards so you can paint them en masse.  If you can't make quantity, you aren't going to make much money or get many out there.
